Clay tiles are often made from locally sourced material. Small-format, handmade tiles are suitable for heritage properties. Larger tiles are faster to lay, and are often used in commercial developments.

Concrete tiles are usually cheaper to produce than clay or stone tiles, and can be given a pre-weathered finish. Profiles include Roman, bold roll, plain tiles and pantiles.

Natural and recycled roofing slates can have smooth or riven finishes, in shades of blue, grey and black. Cast stone tiles give the appearance of a quarried stone roof.

Shingles and shakes , typically made from Western Red cedar, can be used as roof tiles or wall cladding. The wood is sawn or split.
