Challenge

The new urban park at Portlaoise includes a performance space and recreation area. A low-level car park – which forms an intrinsic part of the development – required cladding that looked architecturally pleasing whilst supplying ventilation, natural light and visual screening.

Solution

Lang+Fulton supplied the screening for this area from their range of mild steel louvres.

Panels of louvre Italia were recommended to provide the required ventilation to the lower floor of car parking. Italia-80 louvres were fitted to the raised level, offering the desired effect of visual screening.

The support steelwork for the panels was fixed to the underlying concrete structure at an angle, to create an interesting architectural effect.

Outcome

The Civic Trust Awards Scheme was established in 1959 to recognise outstanding architecture, planning and design in the built environment. The Portlaoise urban park is amongst its most recent awards.
