The stability and integrity of fire-rated doors are tested to BS 476-22 and BS EN 1634-1 . The tests are made on complete door assemblies – including door, frame, integral seals and hardware – set into a wall. This gives the closest indication of how the doorset would perform in an actual fire.

The tested doors are given a fire-rating for providing resistance between 30 and 240 minutes. Nominal fire doors are doors that are not certified, but in the opinion of an assessor will hold back a fire for a specified period of time.

Fire doors are commonly made from steel or timber . Fire retardant materials slow the spread of fire, whilst fire resistant materials do not burn.
