The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop is at the forefront of a productive and exciting Scottish visual arts industry, providing key elements of the visual arts infrastructure through a range of facilities and professional development opportunities.
Solution
Over 266m2 of framed panels of Terra-34 - a grating which conforms to anti-climb guidelines - were manufactured to cover the south, east and west elevations. The panels were fabricated in sixteen different sizes up to 2.5m high and 1m wide and were fixed to the structural framework with custom welded plates.
Access through the structural opening in the east elevation was provided by a very large double leaf gate which had to be of unusual size to allow for the removal of large sculptures and installations. The gate consists of six separate panels within each leaf for an overall size of 4.6x5.3m (hxw).
Outcome
As a result of a recent Arts Funding Prize, an ambitious extension with an outdoor arena is currently under construction incorporating more screening panels.
