Overview
Standard Patent Glazing Company undertook the task of reglazing 2 hipped atrium towers, the conservatory and the café area at Pavilion Gardens in Buxton. In total, 550m² of Traditional patent glazing was installed.
Pavilion Gardens is a treasure trove of Grade II listed Victorian buildings, each overlooking the pristine gardens from its northern boundary. A wide promenade graces the front, setting the stage for a journey into history. The central pavilion and conservatory, cast iron and glass marvels from 1870, were designed by Milner in the grand style of London’s Crystal Palace.
The central hall of the Pavilion, home to a café, underwent rebirth in 1983 after a fire threatened its existence. The conservatory, once a small concert hall with a stage and organ, transformed into a greenhouse conservatory adorned with tropical plants and a tranquil fish pond in 1982.
Restoration
Across three phases of dedicated work, Standard Patent Glazing company undertook the task of reglazing 2 hipped atrium towers, the conservatory and the café area - 550m² of glazing in total. The Conservation Officer’s choice was the Traditional wing-type glazing system, a selection that closely replicated the existing design while ensuring a seamless transition.
The atrium towers were single-glazed, preserving their historical essence. In contrast, the café and conservatory received a double-glazing treatment, infusing a touch of modern thermal efficiency into this historic restoration.
The challenge of continuity
A significant challenge lay in keeping Pavilion Gardens accessible throughout the renovation process. However, through meticulous coordination with the client and principal contractors, this feat was achieved. The complex task of surveying the existing glazing systems months ahead of their removal proved another hurdle. The intricate, uniquely-shaped structure posed challenges in obtaining accurate measurements. Nevertheless, the survey was successful, setting the stage for a smooth installation.
Result
The Pavilion Gardens have emerged from their rejuvenation, preserving their Victorian elegance while embracing modern-day enhancements. The glazing renewal has added a layer of protection and thermal efficiency, ensuring these historic structures can continue to delight visitors for years to come.
This case study underlines the company's commitment to seamlessly blending conservation with modernity, ensuring that places like Pavilion Gardens remain timeless, yet functional, for generations to enjoy.
