- B50 vertical bar balustrade system
Challenge
BA Systems was contracted to undertake the design, manufacture and installation of balustrades to the terraces, juliette balconies, some ground floor areas and privacy screens at Forest Road, a development of 90 new homes in Walthamstow.
Created with cutting-edge design and a contemporary feel for local first-time buyers, these homes are situated across from Lloyd Park and the William Morris Gallery.
Project detail
Due to the unique architectural design of the building, the balustrade required bespoke angled vertical bars with intermediate circular sections to achieve the architectural intent. This detail was coupled with a specific colour coating which was applied to all external metalwork areas.
Working with Legendre UK, BA Systems got involved by designing, supplying and installing the B50 vertical bar balustrade system for the juliette balconies and roof terrace balustrading. One challenge that was overcome was meeting the complex planning requirements by designing the angled vertical bars. To achieve a stunning finished look, BA Systems applied a bronze-effect PPC, enhancing the historical significance and timeless charm of the building.
Juliette balconies to interface with the windows
BA Systems was required to attach all juliette balconies to the window system. This meant that the weight of the system had to be kept to a minimum. This was achieved through use of its aluminium B50 system which is sometimes 60% lighter than a steel equivalent. This was achieved without compromising on the angled vertical bar aesthetic.
Roof terrace balustrading to interface with the terrace floor finishes
The base rail for the B50 vertical bar balustrade was provided as a continuous U-profile. This provided a straight edge for the paving floor finishes to abut. It also provided a neat cowl detail for any waterproofing finishes that were dressed around the steel posts at circa 1m centres.
