Meadowmat is a green roofing product that makes it easy to establish a biodiverse habitat on the harsh environs of a roof.

The 23 species of native flowers and grasses have been specially selected for their suitability to the conditions on a roof.  They are perennial, frost-hardy, reasonably drought-tolerant and tough enough to put up with blustery winds and blisteringly hot summer days.  

Each species has a particular value to wildlife. The flowers are nectar-rich and attractive to pollinators. There is a long flowering period and the robust sward is a great place for mini beasts to shelter in.

Meadowmat is grown from seed with native provenance.

How to install Meadowmat

Unroll Meadowmat onto a minimum depth of 100mm of green roof substrate for instant plant coverage. There is no need to wait for seeds to germinate, and there will be no need to plant individual plants. 

The roof must be fully waterproofed, well drained and able to cope with the weight of substrate and plants. Irrigation should also be installed.

Maintaining a roof meadow

A roof meadow is a great way to earn BREEAM credits for a project and it needn't be expensive to maintain.  If it is properly installed, all that is needed is to cut down and remove spent vegetation once a year. Harrowden Turf recommends carrying this work out in early Spring so that insects can overwinter in the stems.
