Challenge

Fitness operator Pure Gym built a new fitness centre at the new Sovereign House in Nottingham. The building is a mixed use development.

Main contractor Sivil Group has carried out several new build facility for Pure Gyms. Riding Floors was appointed as the flooring contractor, and approached Total Vibration Systems when specifying the floor in the free weights area.

The gym is on the first floor of the building, with the unit below available for rent as an office or retail space. As part of Pure Gyms' tenancy, they had to ensure that noise from the free weights area in particular, and the gym in general would not disturb any occupant below and jeapordise the landlord's ability to lease the space.

Solution

TVS impact flooring system had been trialled and was proven at other gyms around the country. 

For the free-weights area, TVS recommended a specially adapted floor with two layers of TVS Vibsorb 10 shock underlay. It was finished with SPORTEC® Style Tiles, which transmit impact shock. These heavy-duty 40mm tiles absorb impact sound and dissipate shock. The impact from dropped free weights, while sometimes not damaging the floor finish itself, can also result in serious damage to the concrete subfloor. 

The functional zone, which is used for aerobics and other fitness classes, was installed with standard SPORTEC® Colour-15 sports flooring in black and green to match Pure Gym's corporate colours. A 10mm thick underlay of Vibsorb 20 was used to protect the people excercising in this area.

Outcome

The gym opened in late 2012 and is already busy. TVS acoustic and impact absorbing flooring solution meets the requirements of the landlord, so that Pure Gym's fitness facility does not create any noise or impact disturbance for the unit below.
