Harrowden began as four independent regional turf businesses which have combined now to create a national horticultural grower specialising in amenity lawn turf, wildflower turf, sedum blankets, topsoil, plug plants, and grass and wildflower seed. We also supply an extended range of carefully selected trade-rated horticultural products and tools to enable both professional contractors and retail customers alike to deliver outstanding results whether for new landscaping projects or for the ongoing maintenance of green spaces.
We are proud of our position as the UK’s largest grower and distributor of turf, wildflower and sedum boasting a wealth of specialist growing skills and experience from across the country coupled with in-depth sector knowledge gained from more than 60 years in the business.
We operate in a very dynamic sector which has hard-wired in our culture of innovation whether through product development, embracing new technology throughout our production and customer service processes or refining the important role that logistics play in delivering outstanding overall service. Recent examples are:
· Harrowden was the first in the UK to invest in new turf harvesting technology from the United States and we continue to develop our own bespoke machinery to improve quality, consistency and efficiency.
· Product development is key to remaining relevant and Harrowden continues to update products to address the changing climate, interest in greater biodiversity and stay in touch with demands of the market and our customers. This includes products like our specialist shade-tolerant turf, Shadesman+, or green roof kits developed for both professional contractors and retail customers alike.
· Harrowden takes the reliability of its products and service very seriously. As a result of the challenges experienced in the supply chain during COVID especially, we have taken control of how we source many of our inputs. This includes developing our own specification for substrates used in our wildflower and sedum products, and where we source seed and other components. We have taken the unprecedented step of taking complete ownership of our wildflower seed product throughout its lifecycle. So, we are growing our own plants, cleaning our own seeds and bringing our own seeds to market. Not only will we be using our own seed in our Meadowmat wildflower turf but we are also making it available to our various markets as fully traceable wildflower seed mixes.
We are focused on being well run and easy to do business with across all of our locations. Our ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 accreditations covering business processes, environmental management and health & safety management, together with our “Silver” FORS accreditation achieved across our transport fleet, demonstrate our commitment to continual improvement and transparency across these areas.
Harrowden is so much more than turf. Our drive is to provide the best products, best service and best overall customer experience wherever you are in the country.
