External wall / rainscreen cladding

(357)

Facade cladding forms the weatherproofing skin of a building. It can be fixed directly to the frame, or be constructed as a rainscreen system. Read More

Rainscreen cladding has a double-wall construction, with a subframe holding lightweight panels. The outer skin keeps rainwater away from the frame. Behind it is a cavity that provides natural ventilation, and allows remaining moisture to evaporate or drain away.

Cladding can be secret-fixed to the frame for a monolithic appearance, and can have integral thermal insulation.

The choice of cladding material – be it natural or cast stone, metal, terracotta or concrete – is of great importance to the performance of a building, and not least to people’s perception of it.

Timber and weatherboard cladding can be found in a separate category on this website.

In offsite construction, cladding can be fixed to structurally insulated sandwich panels before being taken to site.
