Floor screeds

(88)

Floor screeds to apply to uneven substrates for a smooth, level surface onto which decorative floor coverings can be installed if required. The most common floor screeds are cement based. Others options include resin, calcium sulphate and lime based screeds.

Cement-based floor screeds are the most common type of screed. Cementitous screeds are made up of a mixture of sand and cement and are typically applied to concrete substrates, though more complex mixtures may be suitable for other types of substrate.

Fibres can be added to the cement mixture to create a fibre-reinforced screed, which helps to prevent surface cracking, inhibit shrinking and increases strength and permeability. Chemical additives can also be included to enhance specific properties of the mixture, for instance, giving faster drying times or additional strength.

Calcium-sulphite based screeds, also known as anhydrite screeds, are made up of calcium sulphite, sand, water and chemical additives. The liquid screed can be pumped or poured onto the substrate, which means large areas can be covered in a short space of time, and a more level surface can also be achieved. Liquid cement screeds are also available, but are less common than calcium-sulphate based screeds.

Epoxy and polyurethane resin-based screeds provide a hardwearing, attractive finish to concrete, cement-based and calcium-sulphite based surfaces. Other types of floor finishes and coatings can also be applied to the finished surface.
