Overview

BA Systems designed and manufactured a range of balustrade systems and handrails for One Braham, BT's Headquarters & Commercial Space – a world-class 18-storey, 464,000 sq ft office building in London.

The building includes a double-storey basement for plant, parking, showers, and storage, with ground floor reception and upper retail space. The upper floors provide 326,500 sq ft offices fitted-out to CAT A. The scheme, successfully designed by Wilkinson Eyre adopts a contemporary office feel with exposed ceilings and integrated retail, whilst still boasting some of London’s finest views from the external terraces and glazed facades.

The building will house around 3,500 colleagues and is another flagship location within BT’s Better Workplace Programme. We were pleased to be a part of this development supporting BT’s ambitions for sustainability, innovation, product development and excellent customer service.

Solution

Following early-stage correspondence with the Main Contractor appointed for the works – Mclaughlin & Harvey, we were successfully appointed to carry out the full design, supply and installation of the Balustrade Works. Given the scale of the project and public exposure to the flagship building, design played a large part of our early-stage correspondence. We worked with both the Design Teams and Architects to propose a solution that would align with the Architects intentions, particularly focused on the main stair Balustrade that would be viewed from the external facade. Following several quote revisions, we were finally able to propose a solution that would successfully meet the Client’s intentions as we were appointed for the package. The full package, totalling 1690.3 meters, detailed the following:

  • B20 stainless steel freestanding handrails with no infills
  • B20 stainless steel and mid rail balustrade to stairs
  • B10 wall handrail to stairs
  • B40 structural glass balustrades to reception area
