Challenge

Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School presented the unique challenge of preserving the view of an historic church from the perspective of a modern school building.

The project comprised new and upgraded accommodation for a federated school for 1700 students, situated on the inner city campus of an existing girls’ school. It includes boys and girls secondary schools, a sixth form centre for 16-18 aged students, and a community centre. At £29 million, it is one of the larges DfES funded VA schemes.

Solution

Over 1700 pupils attend this mixed school which joins the local parish church to create the learning village. Clad with over 12,000 RHEINZINK tiles from the patina blue grey range, this sustainable efficient design provides excellent working conditions for the students and local community.

Outcome

This inspiring structure, which sits above the sky line on Tower Hamlets, creates a futuristic setting which is loved by the students and local residents.
