Challenge

This inspirational building, commissioned by Garbers and James and designed by Kisho Kurokawa shortly before his death in 2007, sits in the grounds of Singleton Hospital campus in Swansea. This is the first purpose-built Maggie's Centre in Wales, and is set to provide anybody affected by cancer with support that complements the treatment provided by the hospital.

Maggie’s South West Wales was the first centre to collaborate with the cancer genetics service to offer information and practical support to people who are at risk of cancer, based on family history.

The curving forms mirror the surrounding contours and the wings of zinc link to the central core, which is the main hub of the building.

The simple use of materials and crisp detailing strengthens the bond between the zinc roof and the precast concrete wall panels with titanium infills.

Solution

Zinc was chosen for its rawness and ability to give a living feeling as it weathered and patinated. The surface of the material  changes dramatically as it goes through this weathering process.

High levels of crafting were required for the zinc work and the quality of workmanship has been maintained throughout the project. All Metal Roofing carried out the zinc installation on this unique project.

Outcome

As well as adding to the unique design of the building, zinc is a 100% recyclable material, which offers a long life and a maintenance-free solution.
