In June 1996, the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester was badly damaged by a lorry bomb. The structure withstood the impact, but it was in need of repair.

The Standard Patent Glazing Company was awarded the prestigious contract to replace the three large glazed domes (1000m2), which were damaged in the blast.

The company's Heritage lead-covered steel glazing system was used for the project, and is still the only available patent glazing system that replicates original Grade II listed domes.
