Breathable membranes are vapour-permeable sheets used as underlays in cold and warm pitched roof construction. They allow the roof to breathe while remaining waterproof, and stop condensation forming in roof spaces.

Non-breathable membranes are often used on flat roofs as a waterproofing top liner. They prevent leaks and help to drain water off the roof. Typically, membrane roofing is made from synthetic rubber, thermoplastics or bitumen.

Non-breathable membranes can also be used as roofing underlays on pitched roofs as an alternative to felt, or as a waterproof liner under green roof constructions.

Vapour control layers are used on the inner face of roofs, walls and floors to promote air-tightness and condensation control.
