It is traditionally used to clad houses, but is equally suitable for public buildings such as sports facilities, schools, community centres, or small commercial premises such as restaurants, cafes or visitor centres.

Weatherboarding is traditionally made from wood , and both hardwood and softwood have been used. More recently, plastics such as PVC-U, wood-effect fibre cement and coated aluminium products have been developed.
