Saturday 18th of September, World Cleanup Day, is one of the biggest global-civic movements of our time. Our world has a huge littering problem, with most of the waste ending up in the ocean, damaging the ecosystem and harming sea life.

180 countries took part in World Cleanup Day to help save our planet from litter.

Advocates for Protecting the Environment

Newton are big advocates for taking action to improve the environment and reduce plastic waste. Therefore, when BITA (British and Irish Trading Alliance) joined World Cleanup Day, as members of the BITA community, we joined too!

On Saturday 18th September at 9 am, our team gathered outside our offices and split into multiple groups, taking different routes around Tonbridge, before convening at Tonbridge Park. Splitting up into several groups allowed us to clean as much of Tonbridge as possible. We ended up collecting over 25 bags of rubbish and it was a great day for all those involved! We will certainly be sure to get involved in the event next year.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event, and thank you to the Tonbridge Green Party for joining our efforts and supplying the litter pickers.

Newton's Recycling & Sustainability Initiatives

Newton are committed to reducing our impact on the environment wherever possible, and have several innovative sustainability initiatives. This includes the Newton Recycling Service, our award-winning and highly successful closed-loop recycling service that was the first of its kind in our industry, run in collaboration with our nationwide network of Specialist Contractors.

Our team of dedicated drivers collect plastic waste from site and return it to our head office in Tonbridge, Kent. From here, it is processed into chips to be made into new construction products. Newton have prevented over 20 tonnes of HDPE Membrane from going to landfill since 2017, preventing 22.79 tonnes of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere.

In 2021, this service has been expanded to also recycle plastic and metal containers from our liquid waterproofing products. We estimate that this will save over 7,000 containers from landfill each year.
