Context

The Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World is the newest gallery of the British Museum in London. The new space is located in the 'White Wing' area of the museum, which had been disused for several years and was in need of renovation, including a replacement roof.

Challenge

The roof of the West Wing was originally laid in lead but was later replaced with copper in the 1960s. As part of the original refurbishment project, it was decided to return the roof to the original lead design. Roof timbers and boarding were overhauled and 45 tonnes of new lead added.

Ladder access was required to the roof void area to allow for routine maintenance.

Solution

Bilco supplied 21 SS-50TB roof access hatches, which were specified by the architects, HoK. The roof hatches were custom-made to the required size, since they were larger than the standard sizes available from stock. The hatches were also manufactured with a PPC finish to blend in with the new roof.

Key features and benefits

  • Compression spring operators for smooth, easy, one-handed operation.
  • Automatic, hold-open arm.
  • Closed-cell EPDM sponge gasket for energy efficiency and weather-tightness.
  • Thermally-broken cover and frame design for superior thermal performance.
  • Weatherproof hinges and fittings suitable for exposed locations.
