Lord Norman Foster
Siberian Larch cladding
The Robert Parfett Building of Maggie's Manchester, which offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends, was designed by leading architect Lord Norman Foster.
The building was constructed with a timber frame, with latticed beams forming a design feature inside, to generate a warmth that comes from using natural materials.
Siberian Larch bevel cladding from Silva Timber Products was used externally to create a relaxing, homely impression.
Siberian Larch is a very dense softwood that is ideal for cladding, particularly where a coloured finish is required. Maggie’s wanted a clean, fresh and light look so they chose to finish the cladding in Sansin SDF Pickled White.
Uplifting architecture is something that is essential to cancer charity Maggie’s, and each one of their buildings has been designed to create a relaxing, homely space encouraging a feeling of togetherness among visitors.
Lord Foster said: "This project has a particular personal significance, as I was born in the city and have first-hand experience of the distress of a cancer diagnosis. I believe in the power of architecture to lift the spirits and help in the process of therapy."
