Squires and Brown
Architectural cast stonework
Malvern College is an independent boarding school in Malvern, Worcestershire, dating back to 1865. Haddonstone had previously replaced the ornate pinnacles on Malvern College Chapel using customised stonework.
A multi-million pound development scheme for the college included a £7.4 million project to construct two new boarding houses and the building of a new sports hall, with Haddonstone once again called upon for its custom-made expertise. The architectural style needed to be sympathetic to the architectural style of the original buildings on the campus.
Haddonstone was approached by architects Squires and Brown to supply architectural components for both the new boarding houses and new sports hall. The company was asked to supply extensive and entirely custom components for the project, including special window surrounds measuring over nine metres tall, block work, gable ends, parapet and copings.
As the window heads supplied needed to be reinforced, Haddonstone used its wet-cast TecStone mix instead of the usual semi-dry cast mix.
After discussions with Haddonstone’s contracts department, craftsmen at the company’s Northamptonshire production facility created the numerous bespoke designs utilising both wooden and fibreglass moulds and cast in excess of £100,000 of stonework for the college’s new buildings. The completed extension was modern yet sympathetic to the traditional style of the original complex.
