Originally built in 1902 the Grade II listed Grand Hotel was bought by Newcastle University in 1958 to provide student accommodation.
The historic building, located on Percy Street in Barras Bridge, underwent a £2.5m refurbishment to modernise the facilities to meet tenant demands and improve the building's environmental rating.
The project was part of a wider investment in facilities that included the neighbouring INTO project.
By using Taplanes® pod showers, the number of en suite rooms was increased from 48 to 66.
Taplanes' Jonathan Braunton assisted the client in the specification of the Grampian en suite pod as the best suited product the job, with its rectangular shape echoing that of the rooms.
This flagship development is home to 600 international students, and in addition to the accommodation, now features science labs, a learning resource centre and 90-seat lecture theatre.
